Gilding

The art of gilding on leather appeared in France in 1494 with the use of Alde blocking stamps. It is still practiced in our premises using 23- carat gold leaves and small blocking stamps. Our collection of blocking stamps, palettes and fillets allows us to work on decorations on leather (calfskin, morocco) in the 16th, 17th and 18th century way. The gilded decoration of the semi-bindings of the 19th century which leaves a place for improvisation is always appreciated by our regular clients.

However, gilding is an art in distress and we try to work for its safeguard by repeating or finding the gestures and techniques which have participated to its success and continuity, by using gold for the decorations of contemporary bindings.

Concerning nowadays decorations, we also practice printings under heat which gives beautiful metallic colors and variations of colors different from the gold.
